CARVING STATION PARTNERS WITH CITY FOR
BOSTON SHINES PROGRAM WITH BIGBELLY PURCHASE
The Carving Station Restaurant has become the first business to partner with Boston on the city’s “Boston Shines” program. The restaurant has purchased a BigBelly solar powered trash compactor and has donated it to the City of Boston for use outside its establishment on One Beacon Street near Government Center. A partnership effort between the city, businesses and non-profits, the Boston Shines program is an effort to make Boston a cleaner city.
BigBelly® is the world’s only solar-powered cordless compaction system. It uses the sun’s energy to automatically compact trash at the point of disposal, dramatically increasing capacity by 5 times within the same footprint as ordinary receptacles. Increased capacity reduces collection trips and can cut related fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions by 80%. The enclosed design keeps pests out and litter in. Safe and easy to use, the BigBelly® has proven successful in urban streets, parks, colleges, arenas – and in all weather conditions. An early adopter, Boston has purchased over 60 BigBellies and has successfully deployed them in various neighborhoods.
“We at the Carving Station are pleased to do what we can to help make Boston a cleaner and more livable city. The BigBelly is a great solar energy product that helps city public works efforts and we are glad be a part of the solution,” says Laurence Wintersteen, owner of the Carving Station.
“I want to thank The Carving Station for their support of our trash compactor program. This local business is helping to do their part keeping their community clean. The City will continue to create new initiatives to better Boston and we will need the continued support of our local businesses,” Mayor Menino said.
In addition to the Carving Station, Berklee College of Music has purchased several BigBelly units, which will be placed in the Back Bay at their campus on Massachusetts Avenue and Boylston Street.
Jim Poss, Seahorse Power Company Founder and CEO, stated, “It’s great to see businesses and non-profits partnering with the City on renewable energy efforts to help clean streets, sidewalks, and parks.”
Poss and Wintersteen are both graduates of Babson College’s MBA program. Seahorse Power Company was founded in 2003 and is located in Needham. Choice Group, LLC, which also owns and operates three Pressed Sandwiches restaurants in Boston, owns the Carving Station.
